Bosque del Apache Photo Adventure

A midwinter getaway for some intense bird photography is one of life’s great joys. Over the past few years, I enjoyed photographing birds in Southern Florida. But this year, at the suggestion of my photography partner, John Dykstra, we headed to New Mexico’s famed Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge for a real “shoot-‘em-up” photo adventure.
Bosque is about an hour south of Albuquerque, near the town of Socorro, NM. The river valley that hosts the refuge is along the Rio Grande river, and is cradled by the Chupadero Mountains to the west and San Pascual Mountains to the east. Comprising 13,000 acres, the refuge is the winter home to thousands of geese, cranes, and ducks as well as a varied population of native birds and raptors.
